In an effort to be as helpful as possible we’ve put together a list of some of the most common questions we get from our clients as well as our answers in these frequently asked questions page. If you have another question that you do not see covered here, please do not hesitate to contact one of our progressive steel experts for more information.
Structural steel fabrication involves cutting, bending, drilling, welding, and bolting steel to create different members engineered for construction. It is a multi-step process that converts raw materials into structural components for buildings. ISE has been a leader in structural steel fabrication since 1970.
The cost of erecting structural steel varies based on factors like the complexity of the project, location, size of the building, and current market prices of steel. It’s essential to get a detailed quote from a contractor for accurate pricing. Steel offers stability and less maintenance over time, making it a cost-effective construction solution.
Building with steel offers several benefits, such as high strength, durability, sustainability, and flexibility in design. It also provides resistance to fire, pests, and weather elements.
The time required to erect structural steel depends on the project’s scale, design complexity, and crew experience. Smaller projects take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks, while larger construction could take several months. Generally, steel is considered a faster building option than wood.
The cost comparison between steel and wood can vary. Raw steel is obviously more expensive than wood, but requires less quantity for the same result, and may lead to decreases in material costs elsewhere depending on the project. Steel offers cost savings in the long term due to less maintenance, recyclability, and higher durability. When considering hazards that often afflict wood (rot, termites, breaking) steel often is a more appealing choice.
For design-build projects, we can often begin the design portion within days of an agreement. The construction portion of a project will depend on the scope, materials, and the other trades involved, but typically we can be on-site and ready to begin steel erection in as little as four to six weeks. ISE works hard to give you the most realistic time estimate for your project so you can plan accordingly.
We do not cut corners at ISE, and so our jobs are run through the proper channels, including approvals. We believe this saves time in the long run, leading to fewer changes and field fixes. Our model of keeping the detailing, fabrication, and erection all under one roof is able to streamline the typical approval process. We work hard to deliver the same process and experience to every client, and we believe it’s what has kept us in business for 50+ years.
We do our best to ensure our team’s schedule is optimized for each custom steel fabrication project. Any additional work hours requested will fall outside the original scope of the contract and will be subject to additional charges but can usually be accommodated depending on the crew size required and scope of the project.

This question comes up quite often, and the simple answer is yes. We work hard to offer our clients the fairest price up front in a competitive market that requires it. We consider every aspect of the project and deliver a price that we feel satisfies the expectations of the build and the client.
Yes, steel-framed buildings almost always require a foundation to ensure stability and structural integrity, as well as to meet building codes. The type of foundation needed depends on the building size, design, and soil conditions.
A design and build company provide comprehensive services for designing, fabricating, erecting, and managing both the design and construction phases of a project. This approach streamlines communication, reduces project duration, and can offer cost benefits by designing for construction optimization. Companies that keep most aspects of commercial building design in-house are usually trying to achieve a higher level of quality control. ISE’s services naturally are only structural design-build, meaning the design elements include only structural components such as foundations, floors, framing, roofs, and connections. Elements that are non-structural, such as those related to life safety, energy, HVAC, and aesthetics are then furnished by an Architect or other professionals.
Design-build can be more cost-effective compared to traditional construction methods. Design is typically the means to executing construction work, meaning that its primary goal is to facilitate best construction practices and efficiently select readily available & cost-effective materials. Design-Build isn’t just about what works, it’s about what works best for the given situation. The complexity of steel construction can often make it seem daunting, but by including a design that maximizes the results gained by steel, many projects actually save money while attaining a better finished product.
ISE has a full-time structural PE (professional engineer) on staff licensed to design structural projects of every kind. Although we do not have an architect in-house, we have a full complement of local architects that we have worked with often and can help refer you to the right one for your project.
Bonding is often essential in structural steel, especially in the public works sector. ISE has a 15 million dollar bonding capacity for public works projects, ensuring that as the contractor, we will perform the project per the terms of the contract. We can also provide bid bonds for projects that require them.

Yes, structural steel is used to build homes all the time. Custom steel fabrication within homes offers design flexibility and durability and can often lead to faster construction times compared to traditional building methods. Utilizing steel allows for open floor plans which many builders and homeowners find valuable.
